We're burning the midnight oil getting our website updated tonight (last night by the time you read this). That's because we've got a great new release for you, Tableau 5.1, that is loaded with ingenious features. For all the details, see our "New Features" web page.

Probably the most exciting new capability is the ability for Tableau 5.1 desktop versions to save your public data to the web for embedding in your blog and website -- all for free. The service is called "Tableau Public" and we hope you'll see Tableau visualizations popping up in your favorite blogs and websites.

Robert Kosara has an interesting post up on EagerEyes where he uses Tableau to visually highlight trends in states' presidential party preference. Two readers suggested that the states should not be arranged alphabetically, instead clustering them in some fashion that groups like-minded states.

We recently had the opportunity to post a guest entry at one of our favorite data visualization blogs – Flowing Data. In it, we examined to what extent election polls and election betting data are correlated and whether one leads or lags the other. Check out the full post at Flowing Data. Below we have provided our packaged workbook and data for your own exploration.

Showing Electoral College Impact With Overlapped Bars

by Jock Mackinlay on October 9, 2008 - 3 comments
Electoral.pngRobert Kosara has created an overlapped bar chart that describes the history of US Presidential votes, which is discussed in his EagerEyes blog. This view is interesting because the bars for the percent Electoral vote is on the top when it is less than the percent of Popular vote and on the bottom when it is greater. Although he used Excel computations to generate the view, it is easy to generate in Tableau by defining an extra column. Playing with the resulting workbook, I found that it is effective to sort the bars by the percent of the popular vote because you can clearly see all the presidents that were helped by the Electoral college to get above 50%.

Great news for those of you who are into analytical mapping. Today, Tableau Software released version 4.1 which offers many new enhancements including the ability to use WMS (Web Map Service) map images as background maps for your data visualizations in Tableau Desktop. I personally like some of the satellite maps we've found. 4.1 also offers other enhancements, including Server performance improvements and Active Directory improvements.

One of the blogs I read regularly is Flowing Data, which discusses effective visualization techniques for making sense of data.  A recurring topic is a challenge to the readers: can you improve this graph?

A Winning 10 Days - Tableau Software Honored by Recent 2 Award Wins and 1 Nomination

by Elissa Fink on May 22, 2008 - 2 comments

Gary Player, a great golfer of the 1960's and 70's, once said "The harder I work, the luckier I get". Tableau just had some good luck based on the hard work of our development team (who work hard to listen to customers). In the last 10 days, we were honored to win or be finalists for 3 different awards. In addition to winning the Network Products Guide Award for Product Innovation in Business Intelligence, we were selected as a finalist for the American Business Awards (the "Stevies"). And, just Tuesday we learned we won a CODiE award for Best Business Intelligence/Knowledge Management solution.
