Connection string from file
Posted August 10th, 2008 by Mark Stair
We are going to connect to our SQL Server business application, but want to be able to save the connection string in a common file and then have every data source use the same connection.
So, we would like to refer to a file or something for the connection.
Something like this:
Connect to a File or variable of the connection string Here
..etc

Tell me a little more about the motivation, Mark. You expect the connection string to change rapidly?
In Tableau Server, we've dealt with a flavor of this situation: "My server name changed, so update all my published datasources and workbooks at once." But it sounds like you're without Server, and trying to hit more of a moving target?
We sell a business product for service companies called SME and runs on SQL Server. We just signed up to be a reseller for Tableau. We are looking to bundle some common workbooks that connect to SME. To make these workbooks run properly, all we need to do is change the connection since all the SME tables are the same. Only the connection string changes.
Our product also uses a connection string for SQL Server. So we would like to point to the same connection string, so we don't have to change the data source files everytime we sell the bundle to customers.
Mark,
I head up the team that is responsible for special projects and OEM customizations. If we get on the phone, we could probably come up with a few ideas for you.
Please drop me a note (adahl @ tableausoftware.com) and we can schedule a few minutes to talk.
