Loading Maps & Latitdue - Longitude details with your data

Hi all,
I've tried to load a map of UAE along with the Latitdue - Longitude details of its cities, but the data was not correctly displayed on the map.
Attached, please find the test file that i've created (Map, excel data, tableau book..)
I've succesfully simulated the first sheet of the WOW workbook using the same images and data file, but I need to list down some guide lines to work on for any map.
thanks.

It looks like your workbook is set up to connect to a Tableau Data Extract. When I removed the extract and connected to the excel spreadsheet you attached I was able to build a mapped view in the form that I think you were trying for.
The trick is that the longitude and latitude fields need to be continuous dimensions. Then you should put Longitude on the Columns shelf and Latitude on the Rows shelf.
I've attached a packaged workbook that has the solution in it so you can see how it works. Packaged Workbooks are new with Tableau v3.5. When you save a packaged workbook all of the local files referenced by the workbook (Excel spreadsheets, data extracts, background images, etc.) are saved with the workbook into a single file. It makes it really easy to share your work. However, just in case you haven't upgraded to v3.5 yet I've attached the unpackaged workbook file as well.
Finally, you can learn more about using maps in the Background Images quick start guide or in the Online Help.
Erin:
Thank you for posting this sample set. I was using it as a reference since I'm doing a similar project. However, I noticed that after loading the background image, the "Background Images" dialog box displays "No" in the "Valid" column.
There must be something basic I'm missing as I cannot even load the image. Can you please advise? I've also consulted the online pdf quickstart guides and the online help but cannot locate a reference that would assist me with this problem.
Thanks!
Paul,
The simplest thing that can go wrong is that you forget to put the X and Y fields on your view. If that's not it, then post your workbook as a packaged workbook to the forum, and I'll take a look to see what else might be going wrong.

Austin,
Would you checkout my workbook & data set, because I can not get the background image to show in Tableau.
Thanks
Phil
Phil,
Sorry for the long delay. I was horrified when I noticed I lost track of the request.
The problem was that your latitude and longitude were discrete -- this is usual default when it is a dimension. I changed them to continuous by right clicking on the field that is sitting on the shelf and changing it. The other way to do this would be to make latitude and longitude dimensions. I've attached a fixed workbook.
I didn't actually see the background image, because you failed to send it along. But I tried it with one of my own map images and it worked out okay.
If you haven't tried out Tableau 4.0, it has a lot of features that make mapping and geo-coding easier.
Austin
Austin,
Any chance making your version a .twbx?
Sure. Here's one.
