Map of the United States

Here is a map of the US that you can use in Tableau Desktop. It contains the contiguous 48 states and the borders of Canada and Mexico.

The mapping coordinates are:

X Field Y Field
Longitude Latitude
Left: -125 Bottom: 25
Right: -66 Top: 50

The ocean color (pane background) is:
Red: 200 Green: 225 Blue: 255

Here's how to add the background image:

  1. Download the image and save it somewhere convenient.
  2. In Tableau select Data > Background Images.
  3. Click Add Image.
  4. Click Browse, then navigate to and select the saved image.
  5. Specify the field and coordinates for the X and Y fields (see table above).
  6. Click OK twice to save and close the dialog boxes.
  7. Now the image will appear any time you have your latitude and longitude fields on the rows and columns shelves.

A picture of the background image dialog is included for your reference.

I tried following the directions, but Tableau is not allowing me to enter anything in the X field or the Y field. I can enter the lat long coordinates, just not the xfield and yfield name. Nothing appears in the blue drop down, and the software prevents me from being able to enter in anything - do you know what I am doing wrong???
The x and Y fields must be numeric fields in Tableau (ie the # icon must be next to them in the Data Window).

thanks, erin.
you rock!
