Stacked Area Chart
Posted May 13th, 2008 by John Dawson
I'm being silly i know but does anyone know a simple way of creating a stacked area chart in tableau where I want to stack multiple "measures" onto one chart. The Date dimension would be along the bottom. If I put two items on the row shelf, I get two charts - I can't see a way to get just one. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
John

Hi John,
You can use multiple measures in a single view using the Measure Names/Values fields in the data window. The easiest way to build the view you are looking for is to simply drag the second measure and drop it on the existing axis in the view.
For example, say you have Date on the Columns shelf and Sales on the Rows shelf. Now you want to add another line that represents Profit to the same view. Drag the Profit field and drop it on the Sales axis in the view.
What happens is the Measure Values field is on the Rows shelf and the Measure Names field is on the Color shelf. In addition, the Measure Names/Values card displays so you can see what Measures you are using in the view. You can continue to add more measures by dragging them to the that card.
Be careful though, because often the values of various measures are so different that they don't share an axis very well.
Thanks Erin,
All works well now with stacked bar chart. However can I create a stacked Area chart? For an example, see http://marketing-works.blogspot.com/2008/02/what-is-brand-painting.html
Thanks,
John
Erin,
I end up getting a single chart with two bars. I have a single dimension, vendornum, and then 12 separate measures for the past 12 months of sales. Looking to have each month stacked together (different colors) for each vendor.
