What Are the Most Popular Baby Names 1998-2007 According to U.S. Government Data?

Baby name analysis - not quite as easy as taking candy from a baby but Tableau did make it pretty simple.

Continuing a popular tradition, the Commissioner of Social Security announced the most popular baby names for 2007 on Mother's Day 2008. But also on the Social Security website was a means of capturing data containing the most popular 1,000 female baby names and male names for several years. You don't have to go capture that data - use our packaged workbook containging 10 years data (with Tableau Desktop) to do your own analysis.

This visualization shows the top 10 ranking names on average over the last 10 years and examines their annual rank over 10 years into a graphic similar to "sparklines" popularized by Stephen Few. Note that Emma has never wavered from the top but that other popular names are on the decline. The accompanying Tableau packaged workbook contains the male version of this visualization, as well as several other views of these data.
