This viz by Craig Bloodworth takes BP's June 2012 edition of their Statistical Review of World Energy. In 2008 the costs of a Gallon of regular grade gas fluctuated between a low of $1.75 on 12/15 to a high of $4.56 on 6/23 in San Francisco. With a pricing swing of that magnitude, it is impossible to budget for fuel costs for my daily commute to Tableau Software. At over $4.50 a Gallon I can’t really even use the term ‘budget’. This workbook illustrates the family of curves called trochoids. To get a trochoid, fix a point on a circular disk (like a reflector in a bicycle wheel) and roll it along another circle. This gives a “spirograph”-like effect in some cases, but using global filters, dashboards, and drag-and-drop exploration, we can generate curves. All of the curves shown in this worksheet are computed by combining functions of "theta," which can be thought of as a measure of orbital angle of the rolling circle as it moves. In other words, when theta goes from 0 to 2*pi, the rolling circle makes one complete "orbit" along the inside, or around, the fixed circle.

Using a survey containing ratings from 1 to 10 where 10 is highest, this analytical view shows small multiples that correlate ratings of overall satisfaction, firm expertise and likelihood to recommend for several customer segments. Each circle represents a segment defined by the combination of industry, job function, gender and product; size is the number of customers in that segment. For the most part, it's clear that the longer a customer has been using the product (green color), the higher their ratings. But as specified in the graphic's annotation, firm expertise has little correlation with either satisfaction or likelihood to recommend.

This visualization is simple but striking. The thee measures (average, minimum and maximum price) show us the difference in prices nationally. The color of the "path" in between them is the volatility, darker in times of violent price swings and lighter during more stable periods.
