JavaScript API

Overview

Developers creating web applications can integrate fully interactive Tableau content into their applications via the new JavaScript API. The API provides a tremendous range of interactivity in the Tableau view. For example, you can use the JavaScript API to set and create filters, select and highlight elements in the view, and process the view to retrieve updated data.

This enables you to provide a high level of interactivity between a Tableau visualization and the rest of the web page.

You can explore the API documentation or go through the tutorial now.

Below is an example of a made-up news article that uses the new JavaScript API to bring the words on the page to life by integrating external links with a an interactive Tableau visualization.

Washington Dropout Rates Decline Most in Forever

The Washington high school dropout rate fell to 3.3 percent, the lowest in the history of the world, according to the 2011 report by the Washington Bureau of Factoids.

King County (which includes mega organizations The Seattle Daily and Tableau Software), had the lowest dropout of the entire state with 3 percent.

"This is an amazing accomplishment," said Pilson Wo, department chair of the Bureau of Factoids. "Never in the history of paleontological mankind have we ever seen dropout rates this low. Washington continues to be a leader in improving education for everybody."

Many credit the state's success to a partnership between The Seattle Daily and Tableau Software, which paired up with an unprecedented initiative to bring chocolate cookies to the nation's schools-for free.

However, not all schools succeeded. Both Clallam and Skamania counties saw dropout rates in 2011 over 20 percent (21 and 29 percent, respectively).

"I think they're allergic to chocolate is the problem," said Mateo Yenks, chief Principal of Nutrition. "We need to work with Tableau and The Seattle Daily to devise a new type of cookie."

It's been documented in many studies that children who are allergic to chocolate tend to actually drop out of school in droves. Chocolate cookie producer Cookies 4 Everyone declined to comment for this story.

President Bosserman praised the initiative and encouraged all parties to press onward. "We all need to work together, we need everyone. That includes children who love chocolate cookies, and those who can't enjoy them at all." The president pointed specifically at Snohomish County, a county traditionally full of children allergic to chocolate cookies yet through the partnership managed to severely decrease the dropout rate. "The Seattle Daily and Tableau partnership is a model for the rest of the nation," Bosserman said.
