Taking the Bureau of Labor Statistics data this visualization shows a comparison of the highs and lows in US employment by decade (1948-2009).
About this Viz
Highlight multiple decades to see how they compare to each other. Selecting the 70's and 2000's on the viz, you see the 70s had higher unemployment than the current decade. The scatter plot also show how relatively stable unemployment has been throughout the 2000's, although you can see the effects of the recent financial crises in the red outlier dots representing some of the biggest drops in employment in recent history.
Statistic charts on the web should really be interactive. Until Tableau Public, that had never been easy. But now, I have a tool with which I can explain large and complex datasets in a clear, simple and engaging way.
