Bird Strikes

Ever wondered what species cause the most bird strike damage? This viz takes a look at the Federal Aviation Administration bird strike data from 1990 – 2009.

About this Viz

We can see the vast majority of wildlife strikes cause no damage. But if your plane is struck by a Canada Goose or a Deer, it’s likely that the strike will cause some damage. But, deer can't fly so why are they hitting planes?

If you view the phase of flight for deer strikes, they happen mostly in the take-off run and landing roll. There are no strikes en route, when the plane is flying at altitude.

Compare the strike pattern of deer to the strike pattern of the Canada Goose. Notice how deer strikes happen mostly at night and on the East Coast, while Canada Goose strikes happen at all times of the day on both coasts.
