The nations public pension plans have been decimated by the financial crises. Making a tough loss even worse, many funds have assumed that their assets will grow in the recovery by an aggressive 7-9%. This visualization shows the extreme deficit these pensions will face if they are wrong.

The top map shows the total unfunded value of each states public pension plans. The size of each circle grows with the dollar amount of the states unfunded liability and becomes redder with lower funding ratios. As you can see, there is not a single state whose public pensions are funded greater than 59%. Illinois, Mish's home, is in particularly dire straits.
