Adding an Independent Field as a Reference Line

You have your visualization, but just one thing is missing. A reference line unrelated to any of the fields currently in the view. This article will give you the steps in order to bring in a unique field into your visualization independent of the current view using the level of detail shelf.

Using Level of Detail Shelf

Step 1

You have your visualization, but you are missing a reference line for a field that isn’t recognized in your reference line dialogue window. Select the field you wish to add from your measures shelf and drag it over into the level of detail shelf.

Step 2

Now that our field is in the level of detail shelf it will appear in our dialogue box, so let’s click on our axis and add a reference line. We can now pull down our menu and select our new measure field we added.

Step 3

To make sure we distinguish this line as using a separate field we will add a custom label that will look similar to this:

Now you are well on your way to creating complex independent fields as reference lines!
