Snarge Facts: What's the Chance of Damage?
-
Since 2005, only around 1 in 10 reported wildlife strikes caused any damage. Most of that damage was less than substantial. Only 0.06% (about 1 in 1,700) reported strikes destroyed the plane.
As you change the date filter, the chance of damage seems to have gone down over time. But notice that the number of "no damage" strikes has risen dramatically over time. This probably means that more strikes are being reported. Because of this increase in reporting, the damage rates for the last few years are more correct than the rates since 1990.
What's safer: jets or propeller planes?
Jets have a lower overall chance of damage than prop planes, probably because turboprops fly shorter routes and take off and land more often. This increases their chance of hitting wildlife (especially those deer on the runway). Jets also take less damage when they do strike wildlife.
