How Hard a Crash for 3 High-Flying Tech Stocks: AAPL, CSCO and MSFT
Securities analysts typically peg stocks to a common value on a common date so that relative returns are easily compared – and sorting out the consistent high flyers versus the hard landers is obvious. This is accomplished with a Table Calculation in Tableau. Notice how the starting value of every stock in every pane of the table is zero. As you change the analysis, this table math is automatically re-calculated. Here you’ll see Apple (AAPL), Cisco (CSCO), and Microsoft (MSFT) compared from 2000 to 2003 in Quarter 1 and in Quarter 2. Each flew high and had hard landings - but Cisco had it hardest.
